The capital of the Semirechensk region
The Europa Hotel, the Paris restaurant, fashionable women's hat and shoe stores Warsaw and Vienna, the Twentieth Century cinema, Karp Ovcharov's chauffeur courses, the Nobel Brothers fuel and lubricants warehouses, as well as the G. A. Shakhvorostov Trading House and Sons and the Heirs of Commerce. N. I. Ivanova". Where do you think it is?
The second half of the nineteenth century, the city of Verny. The capital of the Semirechensk region, a huge empire. A "wild wilderness", if viewed through the eyes of a Petersburger of that time, and "a beautiful oasis on the border of mountains and steppe" for residents and visitors of the city living in it.
Today, a century and a half later, there is little in modern Almaty that resembles that city — one-story, solid, "green and cool," as eyewitnesses of those years describe it in their notes. Only a dozen architectural monuments (and even then, it should be noted, thoroughly plucked not so much by time as by man) still preserve the spirit of the Times.
One of these buildings is the house of merchant Sergei Shakhvorostov, which stands at the intersection of modern Furmanov and Aiteke bi streets. Previously, the US Embassy was located in this beautiful and cozy house. It is said that at one time the architects actively opposed the transfer of the building to a foreign diplomatic mission, who were afraid that, having preserved the exterior facade, the new owners would rebuild everything inside. After all, this is exactly the fate that befell almost all of Almaty's "state-protected architectural monuments" leased to private owners. New "owners", as a rule, start renovation projects inside old buildings, covering floors with carpet instead of wooden parquet, ceilings with suspended tiles, demolishing walls and inserting plastic frames into windows. A few months later, the Shakhvorostov house began to be surrounded by scaffolding…
... Once upon a time there was a merchant of the first guild, philanthropist and respected citizen Grigory Shakhvorostov in the city of Vernom. His trading store, which later developed into the Trading House of G. A. Shakhvorostov and Sons, was one of the first commercial enterprises in the city, selling "colonial goods" (imports, in modern terms). The degree of fame of the merchant Shakhvorostov in Verny is vividly and accurately described in Yuri Dombrovsky's novel "The Curator of Antiquities". In the 60s of the twentieth century, the hero of the novel is talking to an old-timer about the history of the city. And here's what the old man tells him about the most famous surnames of the Faithful: "Maybe you've heard of the merchant Shakhvorostov? Well, of course, how can you not hear — there are rows all over the Shopping Street, there are warehouses at the Bread Market."
In those days (the second half of the nineteenth century) The Faithful was divided into so-called "categories". The "first category" consisted of buildings in the square of Kaznacheyskaya (now Kaldayakov), Torgovaya (Zhibek Zholy), Sergiopolskaya (Tulebaeva) and Komandirskaya (Bogenbai Batyr) streets. The best buildings in the city were concentrated here: the house of the military governor, decorated with columns, the houses of the city authorities and the bishop of Turkestan, the House of the officers' Assembly, the men's and women's gymnasiums, the cathedral, the printing house of the Semirechensk regional government and others. (In the area of the "second category" — east to the shore of Malaya Almatinka and west to Kazarmennaya (Panfilova) Street — lower ranks, officers, merchants lived in less beautiful houses; and the "third category" covered the rest of the city, the poor settled in shacks and clay houses). At the corner of the current Kunaev and Zhibek Zholy streets, where the Fashion House is located in our time, the Shakhvorostov Trading House was built.
Later, Shakhvorostov Sr., who had four sons, put each of them in a separate house. Sergey Shakhvorostov got the house that became the hero of our story. The house was built according to the project of architect Andrey Pavlovich Zenkov by the workers of his artel. A talented architect, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Engineering Academy, A. P. Zenkov is rightfully considered the "father of Vernenskaya architecture." Almost all the famous ancient buildings of Almaty were built according to his designs. Zenkov's most grandiose creation is the Cathedral (there are 28 Panfilov Guards in the Park).
Unlike other urban architects, who preferred to build one-story, squat wooden houses after the great earthquake of 1867, which destroyed 1,798 brick houses, Andrey Zenkov developed new construction methods in earthquake-prone areas. At the same time, he retained the characteristic "Vernon features" in the exterior of his creations: an abundance of elements of wooden architecture. The buildings were crowned with "barrels and tents", decorated with "valances, cockerels, towels" and other wood carvings. This is how the hero of the novel "The Curator of Antiquities" defines Zenkov's "style": "[Zenkov] bent and broke the roof lines, decorated them with small carvings and, finishing, erected a huge smooth frontal place of the porch as a pedestal for everything, and then covered it with a dome on top; in a city prone to earthquakes, he erected spires, arches over the windows, patterned grilles on the windows, fanning them with cinnabar and greenery...". Wooden "lace" around the perimeter of the roof, carved shutters and a picturesque porch adorn the building of the US Embassy to this day.
According to some researchers of the history of Almaty, the building of the modern Almaty Merchant Bank (three-storied with columns), which stands across the street from Sergei Shakhvorostov's house just above Furmanov Street, belonged to another brother, Peter. However, the great-granddaughter of Peter Shakhvorostov, Emilia Anatolyevna, in an interview with one of the Almaty city newspapers, said that her ancestor's house was demolished during the Soviet era.
Separate houses and inheritance did not equally separate the Shakhvorostov brothers. After his father's death, they pooled their capital and built a cloth factory in the village of Kargaly. It took a long time to build, for 10 years, but thoroughly. The company is still operating. In 1914, the Shakhvorostovs dressed the entire Russian army in their cloth.
After the establishment of Soviet power, the first city medical school was located in the house of Sergei Shakhvorostov. Until the mid-60s of the twentieth century, future Hippocrats learned the basics of their profession in this cozy house. However, the house has not parted with medical topics for a long time. After college, the Museum of Medicine of Kazakhstan moved in here (there was one at one time). An interesting detail is that at the end of the century before last, one of the Shakhvorostov brothers headed the Vernensky hospital of the Red Cross Society (in modern terms, the city Ambulance).
... And yet it is impossible to imagine Alma Ata without Zenkov's buildings. For all his love of architectural trinkets, carved wood and corrugated iron, he had some kind of honest and clear unity of detail, something that made his building look like a Christmas tree decorated from bottom to top. Here you have a star, here you have cocks, there are also other senselessly beautiful curlicues and pretzels. And there is, there is something really elegant, really jubilant and cheerful in its buildings. He wanted to please and surprise people, and of course he succeeded. I'm sure that people, passing by his building, raised their heads and smiled: how aggressive it is! Throw Zenkov, with his wonderful chambers and towers, out of the city of Verny, and today's Alma Ata will become a little different. And not even a little different, but completely different... Dombrowski. "The Curator of Antiquities", 1961)
